My story
Ruth was born in Soroti District in Eastern Uganda, premature and struggling with asthma from her first day. Her father rejected her — he already had another wife and son, and he resented Ruth's frequent illnesses. After her grandmother died, her grandfather drove Ruth and her mother out of the family home. They followed her father to Mbale and rented a small place in Namatala, but life there was its own kind of suffering. Her father drank heavily and spent his wages at the pub, often coming home to fight and beat Ruth and her mother. Her mother, jobless and exhausted, told Ruth she was the cause of the family's pain — and by age seven, Ruth had absorbed those words so completely that she wished she would not wake up. Some nights the family went to bed hungry. In 2011, Mama Aida and Pastor Hassan found Ruth in a ragged dress with tangled hair, brought her into IChooseYou Ministries, and her smile came back. Ruth is now ready to pursue a course in Education. With a scholarship provider, she can finish what was started when someone first chose her.
